Service Description

Cardiology

Looking after your heart is important at every stage of life. At Affidea, our cardiology service provides expert assessment, diagnosis and ongoing care in a supportive and reassuring environment.

What is cardiology?

Cardiology is the medical specialty focused on the heart and blood vessels. It includes the prevention, diagnosis and management of conditions that affect how your heart works.

At Affidea, a cardiologist will take time to assess your symptoms and review your medical history. If further investigation is needed, we can arrange appropriate diagnostic tests. Using advanced imaging and modern technology, we provide a clear picture of your heart health and explain the results in a way that’s easy to understand.

Recognised as a 2026 Centre of Excellence, Affidea combines specialist expertise with high-quality diagnostic services. Our goal is to provide timely access to cardiac assessment so that concerns can be investigated quickly and the right care plan can be put in place.

We understand that heart-related symptoms can feel worrying. Our team will always explain your results clearly and answer any questions you may have, so you feel informed and supported throughout your care.

Cardiological conditions we treat

Our cardiologists diagnose and manage a wide range of heart and cardiovascular conditions, including:

  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)

  • Chest pain and suspected angina

  • Heart murmurs

  • Arrhythmia (an irregular, fast or slow heartbeat)

  • High cholesterol

  • Coronary artery disease

  • Heart failure

Every patient’s situation is different. Your cardiologist will work closely with you to understand your symptoms and what matters most to you. From there, we’ll recommend investigations and treatment options tailored to your health needs.

To support diagnosis and monitoring, we may arrange tests such as:

  • Blood tests

  • A 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG), which records the electrical activity of your heart

  • Blood pressure monitoring

  • Chest X-ray

These investigations help us build a clearer understanding of how your heart is functioning and guide decisions about treatment or lifestyle changes.

When to see a cardiologist

Your GP may recommend seeing a cardiologist if you are experiencing symptoms such as:

  • Persistent chest discomfort

  • Breathlessness

  • Palpitations or ongoing high blood pressure

They may also refer you if routine tests show raised cholesterol levels, or if you have a strong family history of heart disease.

In some cases, cardiology care is about prevention as well as treatment. Early assessment can identify potential concerns, provide reassurance and support timely care if a problem is detected.

If you’re unsure about your symptoms, speaking with your GP is a good first step. If a specialist opinion is recommended, our cardiology team is here to provide expert care with clarity and compassion.

FAQ

Patient Journey

Patient Journey

1. Booking your appointment

Appointments can be arranged following a referral from your GP, consultant or healthcare professional.

Once we receive your referral, our team will contact you to arrange a convenient appointment time. In some cases, patients may also be able to book directly depending on the service.

When your appointment is confirmed, we will provide details about your visit, including the clinic location, appointment time and any preparation instructions.

2. Preparing for your visit

Some scans or procedures may require preparation before you attend your appointment. This might include:

• Avoiding food or drink for a number of hours
• Drinking water before your scan
• Wearing comfortable clothing
• Removing jewellery or metal objects

If preparation is required, we will send clear instructions in advance so you know exactly what to do.

If you have any questions before your appointment, our team will be happy to help.

3. Arriving at the clinic

When you arrive at your Affidea clinic, our reception team will welcome you and confirm your appointment details.

You may be asked to complete a short safety questionnaire or provide information about your medical history. This helps our clinical team ensure your scan or treatment is carried out safely.

We recommend arriving a little early to allow time for check-in.

Our clinics are designed to provide a calm, comfortable environment, with waiting areas where you can relax before your appointment.

4. During your appointment

A radiographer or healthcare professional will guide you through your scan or procedure and explain what will happen.

Depending on the type of test or appointment, you may be asked to lie on a scanning table or remain still for a short period while images are taken.

Most imaging appointments are painless and typically take between 15 and 60 minutes.

If you feel uncomfortable or have questions at any point, our team will be there to support you throughout the process.

5. After your appointment

Once your scan or appointment is complete, you can usually return to your normal activities straight away.

Your images and results will be reviewed by a specialist clinician, such as a radiologist, who will prepare a report for your referring doctor.

Your GP or specialist will then discuss the results with you and advise on any next steps or treatment if needed.
